In response to schools and colleges requesting control markers that are smaller and therefore less conspicuous when operating within schools and urban parks the BSOA has introduced three new control markers. These are made from made from lightweight polypropylene which is both durable and flexible. Controls can be marked using a permanent marker pen.

The new range consists of:
  • 10cm x 10cm triangular control marker that can be stored flat when not in use and easy for posting.
  • Flat 10cm square control marker with 8 holes for securing horizontally, vertically or flat on the ground. Low visibility controls can be preferable when activities are held in confined areas
  • Flat 5cm square control marker for use by schools and coaches for indoor exercises and activities.

11 June 2010 23:40  ISF ORIENTEERING WORLD SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2011
Italy recently announced that the 2011 Champs would be held at Primiero, Trentino from the 21st May 2011 to the 27th May 2011. As this is an important examination period in England we felt it would be appropriate to ask schools who had sought selection previously for their opinion.

The replies we received indicated that the majority of schools would be prepared to work around exams for the Junior Teams (1996 & 1997 birth year) were any of their pupils selected to represent England. However there was an overwhelming 'No' to the Senior Teams (1994 & 1995 birth year).

At the BSOA meeting on the 5th June 2010 after extensive discussion and with great reluctance it was decided that no Senior teams representing English Schools would be sent on this occasion.

The selection races will be held at the British Schools Orienteering Championships weekend, 20th /21st November. Providing that we have orienteers of a suitable calibre to select from those races, it is hoped that schools can be selected for both junior girls and boys teams and that also 'Select Teams' can selected at that time. All children taking part in these selection races must have the full permission of their Head to take part in the World Schools Orienteering Championships 2011 prior to the selection races.

21 April 2010 21:30  BSOA AGM 5th June

28 April 2008 14:00  ISF 2008 Scotland - Summary from Bill Melville
More than 20 countries competed at last week's ISF World School Championships in Scotland and eleven of them left for home on Sunday with medals- including China's Zhan Xi Ying.

Swedish seniors Anna Segersson and Johanna Olsson both went home with triple gold winning both the long and middle distance events, Anna running in the schools section for Eskjo Gym. while Johanna was just as dominant in the select or individual entry event.

Both also helped their countries to both team gold medals.

And there were three golds - long, middle and team- too for English juniors Charlotte Watson and Jonathon Crickmore in their select divisions. There were impressive performances overall from Sweden, England and Latvia. How do they do it?

The Swedes owe much to their Orienteering School system with the two largest Eskjo and Sandviken making up the bulk of their team in Edinburgh, which competed only at senior level.

Swedish Orienteering has a partnership with some six schools over the country where budding orienteers can opt in to get the best of orienteering training as well as teaching in more traditional subjects.

The English have some 59% of schools now doing some orienteering within the curriculum but continue to owe much to those O-enthusiasts who are working in schools across the country such as Ulverston and Nottingham.

But their links with the British School Orienteering Association system which is producing a two way feed between the schools and clubs seems to be producing dividends.

'Our good club orienteers will get school teams together for the British school championships,' says Peter Christopher. 'They know they need to have school teams registered and school teams at these championships if they are to get to them. And they want to be at these championships.'

Latvia's Ivars Klavins, junior schools middle distance winner at Barr Wood, was their only individual gold medalist, but they won seven other silver and bronze and in the team competition they took both the junior men's titles and won senior girls select plus senior men's school bronze. They shared gold, silver and bronze in the final day Friendship International Team event.

'Most schools in Latvia do orienteering,' explains Inguna Valdmane, one of the team leaders in Edinburgh. 'They run after school. In my school they do it three times a week. Often it is not as a sport but as a recreation activity.'

25 April 2008 21:58  ISF 2008 Scotland - Report from Bill Melville
England topped the individual medal table today's (FRI) middle distance event at the ISF World Schools Championship Orienteering in Scotland, running over sometimes tricky terrain at Barr Wood near Stirling.

The English squad picked up three gold medals two silver and two bronze. Charlotte Watson and Jonathon Crickmore, long course winners at Devilla on Tuesday, made it two out of two in the select entry division.

And senior runner Kristian Jones, third on Tuesday beat Tuesday's winner, Swedish 16y age group champion Albin Ridefeldt into second.

Sweden, also with seven individual medals, but just two gold, were runners up, while Latvia were third.

Swedish gold came from two times winners Johanna Olson (senior select) and Anna Segersson (senior schools).

English overall success owed much to Spain's Antonio Martinez , sprint silver medalist in the European Youth Championships last year, who won the senior boys school division by almost two minutes, so stopping a Swedish 1/2/3 result.

Running for Scotland. the Aboyne Academy junior boys' squad won team silver at the ISF World Schools Championship Orienteering at Barr Wood near Stirling today (Friday).

And there was a second individual bronze for Finlay Langlan, their first counter home in the middle distance event, while Joab Matthews and Sam Burgess finished 12th and 14th.

Latvia with a total time of 2h 40m 15s for their best three counters in Tuesdays' long and Thursday's middle distance events won team gold. Scotland won silver with 2h 44m 32s.

And Poland who had gone itno the second day of competition just 8 seconds behind the Scots finished third with 2h 46m06s.

It was a first ever team medal for the Scots at the ISF orienteering championships.

Langlan, who clocked 14m29s, lost ten seconds at one control and missed individual silver by seven seconds behind Latvia's Ivars Klavins (14:09) and Portugal's Luis Silva (14:22).

18 November 2007 21:25  BSOC07 and the weather
The event went ahead despite the dreadful weather conditions. Congratulations to all the young people who took part. Due to the weather conditions some runners had to use a different dibber from the one originally allotted to them, so there are some corrections to be made and the results are incomplete. Prize-giving was cancelled to allow teams to make an early start for home and the Trail-O course was postponed. Team results will appear within the next day or so. Prizes, trophies & medals will be distributed either by post or at events over the next few weeks.
